A Digital Detox

The concept for this project was largely informed by research highlighting the negative effects of technology overuse in the UK. Studies have shown that excessive screen time and constant digital connectivity contribute to increased stress, anxiety, and reduced attention spans, ultimately impacting overall well-being. The growing demand for digital detox experiences reflects a societal need to disconnect and reconnect with more meaningful, tangible experiences. By integrating these findings into the design, the project seeks to offer an environment where visitors can step away from the pressures of modern technology and engage in activities rooted in the Abbey’s original functions. This historically immersive retreat serves as a response to the increasing need for balance in a digitally saturated world, providing guests with an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and engage with history in a way that is both enriching and restorative.

“Research indicates the sharp decline in in-personal social interaction from

2000-2017, which dropped to about 70% as screen time increased.”
